You sent a follow request to a private account on Instagram a few weeks ago, and since then, there has been no response. The profile does not appear in your followers or notifications. It is impossible to trace this follow request you sent. This ambiguity is normal: Instagram no longer offers a native page to check your pending requests. The only reliable method is to export your personal data, accessible from the Meta Account Center.

Why Instagram hides your sent follow requests

Until a certain time, a dedicated tab in the settings allowed you to see the list of accounts to which you had sent a follow request. This menu has been removed over the updates.

Today, there is no native screen listing your sent requests. If you follow a public account, the request is automatically accepted, and the profile directly joins your list of followers. The question only arises for private accounts: your request remains pending until the person has either accepted or declined it.

In practical terms, this means that the request still exists on Instagram’s servers, but it is visible neither in your notifications nor in the followers section. To find it, knowing how to see my follow requests on Instagram now involves a roundabout way: downloading your data.

Instagram Data Export: The method to find your pending requests

The data export is the only reliable way to view the complete list of your sent and still pending follow requests. Here’s the path to follow in the app.

Access the Meta Account Center

Open Instagram and go to your profile. Tap the menu in the top right, then select Settings and Activity. Scroll down to the “Account Center” section, then select “Your Information and Permissions”.

You will find the option “Download Your Information” here. This is the entry point for the export.

Limit the export to the useful category

Instead of downloading all your data (photos, messages, search history), select only the “Followers and Following” category. This option significantly reduces the file size and preparation time.

Two formats are offered to you:

  • The HTML format generates a navigable file, readable directly in a web browser. You open the file and browse the lists like a regular page.
  • The JSON format structures the data for automated processing. It is suitable if you want to analyze the information via a script or a dedicated tool.
  • For a one-time consultation, the HTML format is the simplest and most readable.

Retrieve and read the file

After validation, Instagram may ask you to confirm your identity via password or authentication. The archive is not always available immediately: preparation can take anywhere from a few minutes to several days depending on the volume of data and the load on Meta’s servers.

You will receive a notification in the app or an email containing a download link. When opening the archive, look for the section dedicated to pending follow requests. Each entry corresponds to a private profile to which you have sent a request that has not yet been accepted.

Cancel a pending follow request on Instagram

Once you have identified the relevant profiles through the export, you can decide to cancel some requests. The action is done directly from the app.

Go to the profile of the account in question. If your request is still pending, you will see a “Requested” or “Pending” button instead of the “Follow” button. Tap it, then confirm the cancellation.

The cancellation is silent: the targeted account receives no notification. You can resend a request later if you change your mind.

This step is useful for cleaning up forgotten requests, those sent by mistake, or those addressed to accounts that clearly do not accept new followers.

Limitations of this method and points of caution

The data export is not a real-time tool. It reflects the state of your account at the time of the download request. If someone accepts your request between the initiation of the export and its consultation, that request will no longer appear in the list of pending requests.

  • The preparation time for the archive varies. Meta mentions that some exports may require significant time in the longest cases.
  • The file does not distinguish between ignored requests and requests that have simply not yet been seen by the recipient.
  • Declined requests also do not appear: if an account has declined your request, it disappears from the list.
  • Only requests still pending are included in the export, not the complete history of all requests sent since the account was created.

Have you noticed that a private profile does not appear in your followers or in your export? This likely means that the request was declined, or that you canceled it yourself without remembering.

The export remains the only source of truth available for a standard Instagram user. No third-party application can reliably access this information via the official API. Tools that claim to do so pose risks to your account’s security, and their use violates the platform’s terms of service.

Keeping a manual record of sent requests, for example by noting usernames at the time of sending, remains the most direct way to track your requests without relying on periodic exports.
